BIG QUESTION, 00 - on, Tell your Audi nightmare stories, I need to know what I'm getting myself into

My 5000S wasn't bad.
Had to replace the leaking rack but other than that I drove it till it had 135000 on the clock.
It's what convinced me to get other Audi's.
All of my new audi's have been remarkably trouble free.

02 saw a substantial upgrade of the whole A6 line, with regard to
sound deadening, etc. They dropped the 2.8 for the 3.0, and continued with the 2.7t and 4.2.
If you can, stretch for the 02 models, otherwise buy one that's got a warranty (01 increased to 4/50 from 3/50) or plan on buying one aftermarket.
While the cars are fairly bulletproof, I wouldn't for example buy an '00 2.7t w/o an extended warranty. Turbo replacement is a LARGE bill.

Your request was just so open ended...
I never had any bad problems and the ones I did have were substantially outweighed by the experience of owning and driving my Audi's.
Several people here have had bad experiences but this forum in particular is one of the most open and honest forums when it comes to both airing problems and extolling the virtues of the Audi experience.
Most people here love their cars despite some faults. Some love their cars and don't have any problems and then there are a couple of people who loved the car but can't stop telling us about their problems. Even after they dumped the car :-)
I have only owned an Audi for the last 3 years so I can't comment on whether or not they are substantially better than 10 or 20 years ago. I can tell you that after driving my A6 for 3 years and loving it, I had a very hard time not buying another one.
