I'd take a 4.2 because of the solid engine and the flairs. But... I had to have a stick.
Also depends if you're OK with the non-sport. The wheels and suspension are replacable if you're so inclined, but not the seats. OK with you?
Assuming yes to both above (and similar condition), an '01 is the way to go because you have the remaining factory warranty and it's slightly better equipped: ESP and Immobilizer.
Only negative: bear in mind that the 4.2 rear seat is only designed for 2 people, not 3. You mentioned bigger family... kiddie seats? It has a hump in the middle (until MY'03) that is specific to that model. Can't really use the middle for a passenger.
