Bizarre engine water temp gauge

I've noticed some very strange behavior in the engine water temp gauge in my '01 A6 2.7T. After a cold start, the temp will very slowly climb from "C" to the normal warm reading (straight up). It's so slow, that the oil temp gauge will read warm before the water temp (something that never used to happen). Then, after a few minutes, the needle will quickly drop back to "C" and then again slowly rise to the center. Car is otherwise functioning properly. Anyone else experience anything similar? Any ideas as to what is going on here? Is this an indication of some larger problem or just a buggy guage? The car has 19,000 mi and will be going to dealer for the 20,000 mi service shortly.

That it does not send off an error code in the computer, and is intermittent, so unless the tech sees it, they will not fix it. It can also cause rough idle.
Keep a camera in the car, and snap a picture of it with the oil temp up, but the water temp down. Include the date and time on the clock display. It shows up better at night, but try both. Digital camera works great here, as you can crop and enlarge before you print
When you go to talk to the service advisor, hand him the picture to give to the tech. It will be enough for them to put a new one one. Better yet, e-mail it to the service advisor a week in advance of you appointment and make him promise to ORDER THE PART!
