blown turbo?

blown turbo?
Do failed turbos always create a lot of smoke and noise? How can you tell if you're getting full boost other than by seat of the pants? I can't even hear the turbos spool on my 2001 2.7 (5k miles). Seems to be running smooth- but where did the whine go?

Not always. As a precursor to total failure, you may be missing power...
...especially on the top end, past 4500-5000rpm, but even then, it will fail more drastically and you will have loud noises and smoke.

If you can't tell its probably is not blown..
If a turbo is blown you won't get any boost on that side and power would be greatly affected. If it were "blown" it means that it would not spool up because you cooked the center section. This would partially block your exhaust on that side. So not only would you get no boost, your ability to exhaust would be restricted. Also the likelyhood of cooking both turbos at same time is not likely. If you have a slight power problem there are many other possibilities besides the turbos. Todays turbos don't fail very often, assuming you are maintaining proper cooling and lubrication.
