Well, I was worried for a second, then the word WOMAN was displayed, and I thought "OK, it's some kind of warning", and then SANTANA displayed... Information on the song that was playing, how cool!!!
I showed my GF my new discovery, and she says, oh yeah, my TT does that too. So much for finding something before her, anyway, it brought up a question. How does it send the info to the radio? She thinks it is digital, but I think it is an analog radio signal that carries the song info and the radio can pick up both the info & the music.
I did a search, and think I am right, because nowhere does it mention digital, but that doesn't mean it isn't. So, who knows if the signal that RDS picks up is digital or analog?

analog signal... doesn't always work.. wait until High Definition Radio broadcasts.. that's digital.
it's supposed to compete with XM...you can transmit alot of data with HD radio... one of my stations in Seattle is going to test pilot HD radio..106.1 Kiss if you Seattlites want to know.. currently, when i run RBDS on that station, they give me snow reports..

Radio Data System. Quite common in Europe, and catching on slowly here. Not all stations do this.
Basically it is a secondary signal that is piggy-backed onto the primary signal.<ul><li><a href="http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question323.htm">All you want to know</a></li></ul>

One LA station used to use it on their billboard
you'd drive by and on a drawing of a car radio would be the name of the song they were playing at that moment. Damn you'd think, how'd they do that? RDS.
There's a related function that sends out the station call letters, their ad slogan, and codes the station type (talk, classic rock, jazz, etc.). I've noticed that when I rent GM cars you can ask the radio to find all the stations in the area in a certain genre and then scan through them.
