Default Brake Rotor Prices

In November 2007 I bought a set of EBC GD1186 slotted/drilled rotors for the front of our 2K 4.2 (with the 8 pad set-up) and the cost was $192 for the pair. In just looking again, I see that the price is up in the $325 range -- any explanation for the large increase?

Same vendor? same part?

I dont think i would pay that. What do you need drilled / slotted (which is it?) anyway. It just weakens the rotor.

Yes, same vendor and parts. It's these rotors: http://www.buybrakes.com/store/EBC-GD1186 I put them on the last time around (along with EBC Yellowstuff pads) because the car does 90% stop-and-go driving, and the existing Pagid rotors and pads that my local shop had been putting on were wearing out very quickly and making a ton of dust. Since I was doing the job myself for the first time, I thought I'd spend some of the labor savings on what I considered to be superior rotors and pads. I've liked the increased stopping power and dust reduction that the EBC set-up has provided.

hate to burst your bubble, but the dusting and pad ware increase with slotted rotors..... and advantage was because you were using better pads that dust less....
good pad are better then rotors hands down, so is upgrading to stainless steel lines. we only EVER use slotted rotors or drilled rotors on track cars,

so you increased abrasion to reduce wear?

Slots and holes create more edges and more wear and more dust

... and i have issues with them on track cars too, since they crack and then can explode. Seen quite a few. Nasty to have a wheel lock at 120 mph with a wall neat to you. Can spoil your whole day.

Well, as is the case with tire compounds and treadlife and cornering ability and cost, etc., it's all a trade off, no? All I can tell you is that the current set-up produces better braking and less dust than the Pagid rotor and pad set up that was on the car previously. If I went to non-dimpled-and-slotted rotors, I'd probably give up a bit of performance but have even less dust. I may try that next time the rotors are in need of replacement. I will be checking them shortly; my mechanic tells me that the rotors are warped, but I certainly don't feel it, and when I put a caliper on the rotor to see how much of it remains and when I check the run-out on the disc, I'll know for sure.

They're actually slotted and dimpled rotors -- the drill holes don't go all the way through.

no its not a trade off. With the exception of one small technical issue, the drilled rotors are worse on all accounts. The drilling is done to reduce the Bernoulli effect under very hard applications. You don't see those conditions.

Drilled rotors cost more, wear worse, can crack, and as a by product of wear, create more dust.

Define "brakes better" - higher Cf? If that always better? If you like it, why not shop for pads by Cf?

Not sure why the EBCs are so expensive. Got my last set from these guys http://www.drt-sport.com/bigcell.php?i=3361 Fronts were Zimmermans and the rear some Italian brand (sorry forget the name).

Cheers
