Default Brakes pads aren't supposed to look like this, are they?

My braking ability has been deteriorating for a few months now. The dealer just flushed the fluid, and that didn't help. I'm going to be replacing the rotors and pads this week (can't decide between Zimmerman x-drilled or ECS slotted), but I needed to take a look at the wear sensor connector to see if it was round or square (for Mintex Red Box pads). While doing this, I noticed the pad seems to be separating from its backing. Is this how pads always look? This is from a front rotor...both sides looked like this.

Look like as opposed to what? The pad itself looks normal to me.

Default So that gap between the pad backing and the pad's friction surface is normal?

The friction surface isn't about to fall off of the pad?

Is that what that black line is? If it's a gap, then no, not normal.

Default If it is a gap, this could be next, ...

and the pads need immediate replacement. VERY BAD THINGS can happen if the pad material seperates completely.

Default Just ordered my Zimm's today, and will pick up the Red Box pads later today...

Not sure what was meant by "sensor only comes one way". Do you mean connector style? ECS has two for sale...round and square...mine is square. If you meant something else, please advise, since I'll be going through this shortly.
