Default brand new vehicle

what is the best way to drive a brand new car? I've heard that you shouldn't drive it too hard...but for how long? I've also heard that you should vary the RPMs...what is the deal?

4K RPM and under for first 1K miles, vary your RPM's (don't ride in cruise control).

Snowtoy also recommended keeping it under 5K for the first 5K miles... i'm trying to but its awful hard...

Default That was in therory.......

I was unable to stick with either of those guidelines.... much like speed limits they are just things to consider....

Congrats on the new ride - I hope you got your vacination shot for the aftermarket bug.....

Regards -

Default Agree with the first 1000 miles but I don't know why...

I'm unaware of any real proof that this is really of any benefit. When I got my Integra new, I ran the hell out of it from day 1 with no regard to engine speed, hell the redline was 8200, I wasn't stopping until the limiter kicked in. I wasn't really that bad, but when I sold it at 115,000 miles, it still ran sweet and burned no oil using semi-syn and syn oil every ~5000 miles.
I took it easy with my 4.2, maybe it was because it cost 2 1/2 times as much as the Integra, but a 3 week delay to full throttle was an easy price to pay for the mental security.

Default First 1000 miles, try to tip into throttle slowly - by this I mean avoid sudden heavy torque

loads. RPM is not as important - although trips above 4500 should be brief and not too often. Take care to gently warm the engine completely before you romp.

Brakes should be bedded in gently to start ( first 30 stops ), and then harder ( next 10 ). Try not to stop hard and then sit with calipers gripping the rotor. This creates hot spots that could contribute to rotor warp.

Tires take a few hundred miles to develop full grip. Look out !

Enjoy !

Default And I know some people who say drive it like you're gonna drive it...

Arguments can be made on all sides...

I do think slow and steady gives things time to seat and wear properly...

The 5K thing is kind of hard to stick to (specially leaving the toll booths) but I behaved pretty well up till 1K.
