Happended to us - either the wifie or the kids (both denied it). You have to get the whole new unit, but relatively inexpensive.
Though you could buy it and do it yourself, the center console is pretty complicated to access, and so the dealer did it for one hour of labor.
Well worth it.

It looks as if yours was similar to my original part - it has the crystal clear plastic stem in the middle. The part is the entire switch unit
When mine broke, I was told the old part number did not even exist. The new part has a different **** and the stem is a different black plastic.
The worst part: it's a $75 part.![Frown](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Edit: You can easily do this part yourself, DO NOT pay for labor or you will double the cost. The part will pull straight up, its just two tension clips holding it in. Once the piece is out, just detach one wire and hook it to the new part, re-insert and you are done!

My original was:
4B1 959 551 (dealer said it doesn't exist!)
The replacement:
4B1 959 565 A
Thanks to the unknown AW C5 member who looked it up for me the first time around!
