Default buying advice - used A6 2.8 vs 3.0

To supplement my B5 S4, I'm looking at two used A6 Avants from model years 2001, 2002. Both cars are very similar in terms of mileage, options and overall condition.

Obvious difference is that the 2002 has the newer 3.0L V6 vs the 2.8L.

Is it worth paying a bit more for the 3.0? I usually am leery about the first model year of a new engine, but then again, a little more power and torque are a good thing!

Any advice on engines and A6 avants greatly appreciated.

Default my old 2.8 leaked oil like a mother before 60k for what its worth...

cam seals on both sides Check the maitence records for both, timing belt is a must around 60k and the seals are easy to do at the same time.

Default The 3.0 in my '02 A4 has been solid through 66k miles (knocks on wood). I also know a...

couple of other 3.0 owners who are at near 100K miles and have had zero issues.

Default personally, I'd get the 3.0

it's a little bit less anemic in the power department stock (though you can supercharge the 2.8), but more importantly 2002 is a "facelift" model year with revised styling, and a few better features here and there. both would be great, but I really think that between both reliable engines, it becomes more of a model year difference issue (and both engines are about the same on reliability, even for a first-year)

Default 2002 may have more options...some subtle, some not...

Mine has Bi-xenons and passenger side seat memory. I think 2001 does not? (At least not both)

I also have the 6-disc in-dash CD changer, which I think was not available in 2001.

If those things are important to you, I'd go with the 2002.

Default correct on all counts. Plus: 2002 came with thicker glass for quieter interior at highway

speeds; amber colored lenses for the rear turn indicators; significantly improved fog lights; and the "face-lift" with newer style bumpers and grilles.

I'd go for the 3.0 if the price is pretty close.

Default 3.0 has been quite reliable...220 hp...

not the most quiet or smooth engine, but does a good job with all around driving.
