To supplement my B5 S4, I'm looking at two used A6 Avants from model years 2001, 2002. Both cars are very similar in terms of mileage, options and overall condition.
Obvious difference is that the 2002 has the newer 3.0L V6 vs the 2.8L.
Is it worth paying a bit more for the 3.0? I usually am leery about the first model year of a new engine, but then again, a little more power and torque are a good thing!
Any advice on engines and A6 avants greatly appreciated.

cam seals on both sides Check the maitence records for both, timing belt is a must around 60k and the seals are easy to do at the same time.

it's a little bit less anemic in the power department stock (though you can supercharge the 2.8), but more importantly 2002 is a "facelift" model year with revised styling, and a few better features here and there. both would be great, but I really think that between both reliable engines, it becomes more of a model year difference issue (and both engines are about the same on reliability, even for a first-year)

Mine has Bi-xenons and passenger side seat memory. I think 2001 does not? (At least not both)
I also have the 6-disc in-dash CD changer, which I think was not available in 2001.
If those things are important to you, I'd go with the 2002.

speeds; amber colored lenses for the rear turn indicators; significantly improved fog lights; and the "face-lift" with newer style bumpers and grilles.
I'd go for the 3.0 if the price is pretty close.
