A/C kicks on and off randomly

It blows very cold air when it's on but sometimes when I'm idling and then sometimes when going down the road it will just kick off.
I then start to adjust my climate control temps, and then sometimes it kicks back on.
Would it be the compressor? I'm hoping not, since that would be very costly..
Thanks for any help!

Most systems though, you shouldn't feel a very wide swing in the temperature or humidity of the air. The cycling happens every few seconds as pressure builds up, the high pressure switch kills the compressor, the low pressure switch turns it back on and so forth (very simplified and I don't know how Audis work specifically). It should come back on before the air coming out of the vents has time to warm back up. Are you just feeling the compressor cycling on and off or is it having a hard time regulating temperatures inside the cabin?
If the compressor is cycling on and off, then it's probably fine and there is a control system problem (sensor or control head). Compressors are usually all or nothing.
Also, a lot of cars have a WOT shut-off for the A/C, so if you're spending a lot of time with your foot on the floor, it'll keep the A/C system from activating.
Have you checked refrigerant levels (probably a professional thing, though)?
