Thanks guys,
I'm happy to have the car diagnosed, I just wanted some sort of info so I didn't get bent of the desk to get it repaired.
I'm fairly new to the US, are there any reliable chains of shops that do AC work?, the local Audi stealer is hopeless....

dont forget alot of these cars use a clutchless compressor, so they run all the time. Theres a variable displacment block inside that meters a/c output when voltage is supplied. If the compressor is getting voltage, but pressures stay static, the compressor is junk or the expansion valve is stuck open.

well of course, its going to suddenly apply voltage to the compressor and its going to go from 0% duty cycle to 100%. And drag the engine down. But i just looked it up and they didnt start the clutchless compressors on A6's untill 2005. So yours does have a clutch.

Thanks, I was going to look it up too. Saved me booting up my laptop to virtual PC Windows 7? to run eBahn which doesn't run on latest Windows OS...but that's another pet peeve.

Your best bet is an independent Audi shop...post where you live and someone might know of one. There are a couple in the MD (Rockville) area.
