Default C5 A6 2.7TRe-occuring B2 S1 Malfunction in Circuit

These forums have helped me before, and I'm scratching my head at this re-occuring issue with my A6 big time.

Tuesday, 06 April 2010, 17:03:30
VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-S

Control Module Part Number: 4B0 907 551 AA
Component and/or Version: 2.7l V6/5VT G01 0001
Software Coding: 06712
Work Shop Code: WSC 26130
Additional Info: WAUED64B91N047196 AUZ7Z0Y1562177

1 Fault Found:

16534 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B2 S1: Malfunction in Circuit
P0150 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Now the kicker - I have already replaced this Oxygen sensor with the Bosch universal 4-wire planar sensor - spliced in (NOT soldered) following the strict tech articles and instructions from Bosch, and the actual Bosch posi-lock connector. It's super secure and I doubt it could be the cause of the issue, but... anybody have experience doing this also on a 2.7T?

What gives? Is there common failure points in the harness or connector, and if so how would I test for this?

Also on my readiness test, even after warming the car up it says "failed or incomplete" on "Oxygen sensors" and "Catalytic converter" categories. Is this likely due to B2 S1 malfunction in circuit? I have proper piggie pipes (with relocated rear O2's) if that makes a difference... however the B2 S1 sensor problem precedes this by a couple of months, and being B2 S1 which is front sensor and should have nothing to do with piggies... ?

This issue is driving me CRAZY... Thanks in advance

I also forgot to mention that I had this issue when I bought the car and first scanned, and the same code would come up all the time, after clearing and run around the block, so that is why I replaced the sensor.

Although that clearly made a difference, I now get "intermittent" and it only spits it every 2 or 3 days.

Thanks for the knowledge or any tips you guys can offer

I'd replace it with OEM.

The "not ready" codes are not related. It takes about 100 miles for those codes to pass readines.

Thanks for the information, I had a look at it tonight and I couldn't find anything "wrong" except I did notice that somehow the connector had fallen out of the firewall hanger bracket thats supposed to hold it in place. Possibly I'm thinking I bumped this off when putting the coolant reservior back, or I have no idea other then that.

I took it apart, cleaned the connectors with some alcohol based electronic circuit cleaner, checked all the pins and let it dry for an hour, then connected it all and hung back into the bracket.

Do you think its possible that just having the connector bounce around over bumps etc would cause the code?

On the readiness - I have to pass emissions here in Canada (haven't gone through yet, just got the car) ... should I make sure that all those checks pass before I do emissions testing? ie drive 100 miles before doing emissions?

Is that the normal case or just due to the piggies?

Thanks

I think you have an issue with the wiring somewhere, probably the sensor wiring. I'd replace with OEM.

Piggies have nothing to do with anything, except maybe any damage the install did to wiring.

100 miles of driving does not insure readiness will pass. You can either force readiness if you have VAG-COM and a steady foot, or you can drive, check, drive, check, until all codes pass.

Yeah, I definitely think its a wiring issue also - I have a hard time thinking I got a bad sensor brand new in the box, OEM or not.

I should say I did my B1S1 spliced with the universal sensor and its working perfectly, so I hate to spend another 200 on a OEM one, but if that's needed then obviously no choice there. I'm thinking the only real benefit of getting the OEM one is that I get a new connector for the sensor side.

I drove the ~40 miles into work today and so far no code, its going to take few days to know whether it was just dirty pins or due to bouncing around not hung in the bracket properly.

I'm holding out some hope that it's the case! If it's not I'll have to look for OEM sensor I guess.. Thanks for the help
