Cam plug replacement question

Has anyone successfully replaced the cam plug as pictured above without removal of the valve cover? If so, can you share your methodology?
Alternatively, do I need to get a new valve cover gasket if I have to remove the valve cover to replace this plug or can I re-use the valve cover gasket? My car is leaking oil from the plug and I need to replace it. I did the valve cover not that long ago and I would hate to replace it since it is not leaking at all.
Thanks a lot!

Sure. It's possible. Replace it just like a seal. That said,...
It's much easier to replace if you pull the valve cover. Which side are you doing? Are you sure it is the source of the leak. Those leak, but not as much as a cam adjuster seal.

Disagree. Not only should gaskets always be replaced, but this is a high failure item.
I might chance it with a rubber gasket if it was only on there a day or so, but really it should be changed.
