Default cam tensioner noise 4.2 engine

Hi guys, jumping over from the A8 board. I have a 2000 A8 which the dealer has told me has normal "cam tensioner" noise. It "rattles" as I'm revving the engine up and down at certain speeds. My question is, has anyone had this repaired successfully ? I'm running Mobil 1
(10w30)for those that have maybe changed oils to quiet it down. I'm in CT if by chance someone local did some work for you.

thanks,
Bob

Default My A6 4.2 has the same issue...

I have 64k miles. It happens when my engine's at lower speeds (idle to 2000rpm) and the rpm changes up or down. I have not had it repaired yet, so I'm interested to find out if the problem may get worse down the road or if it's just "noisy" and nothing to worry about. I'll be paying for it out of my pocket so I want to put it off as long as there's no danger.

I don't think changing oils will affect the noise. From what I understand (how it was explained to me), that area is not oiled. I could very well be wrong though.

Default mine has a rattle to that might be the same thing.

It did it when I bought the car with 59k on it. Now it has 91k and the noise still sounds exactly the same. However, this is a very distinct rattle when revving between idle and 1300 rpm. My old V8q with the 3.6L V8 had stretched cam chains for a fact and that was more of a low growling sound.

that area is lubed
the piston inside the adjusters vibrate and create the chain rattle

Default Cool, thanks for explaining it better...

So is it a problem with a seal that doesn't allow proper lubrication?

it eventually gets too loud
you need to replace the adjusters
and check your oil pressure

Did you ever determine if the noise was being caused by the camshaft chain tensioner? I'm currently working on this same problem.

I'm working on this same problem. Is the noise an indication that the adjuster needs to be replaced? Also, is there a rebuild kit for the adjusters (tensioner). A new OEM adjuster is $522 online from an Audi dealership. Any aftermarkets adjusters available, if you know? Can only find new.

Rip off the cam covers and look at the cam tensioner shoes/pads. They may be gone/cracked/worn.
