Default Camshaft Seals and Transmission Seals

Has anyone done their own camshaft seals and transmission seals?

During routine maintenance on our 1998 A6, the dealer said that we should probably get the camshaft seal and the rear transmission seal replaced.

Is this a big deal and could I do it myself? I do most of all my own maintenance, but have never done these particular ones.

Is there anywhere in this Forum where these are described?

Default Camshaft seals rarely leak - cam adjuster seals, perhaps?

There should be something in the tech section.

For the rear seal, the exhaust has to be dropped to access this. Other than that, it's not a bad job.

Hi 4Driver4,

How does one pull the rear seal? Isn't it a press fit on? Therfore, how does one grab it to pull?

Default I do them with the timing belt.

If they leak in another 10k, you have crankcase vent issues.

Default Once the exhaust is out of the way, it's pretty easy:

Unbolt the center drive shaft and move it out of the way.
Remove the bolt from the center of the flange, mark the location of the flange relative to the shaft in the center, and remove the flange.
Once the flange is out, the seal can be popped right out with a ply bar. Drive in the new seal, and put it back together.
