Default camshaft timing chain tensioner?

The dealer is telling me I need to replace both of my camshaft timing chain tensioners, and I was quoted 2K! Does this sound right? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Default You are too cruel by half,,,,,Cam BELT tensioners should be changed on some models ...

when a new belt is fitted. The tensioner is spring loaded hydralically damped assembly that can fail. It should not be 2k, more like about $6-700 I would guess if the belt is changed at the same time.

Default Wrong part.....

He's talking about the cam CHAIN tensioner.

There's a chain that "times" the cams together that is "inside" the heads. The seals on these fail all the time and this is what he is talking about based on the price. These are also called cam tensioners or cam adjusters.

This a completely different item from the cam belt tensioner that you are talking about. $2000 is the usual dealer price for what he's talking about.

My apologies. The car is a 1998 A6 2.8 30 valve.

Default Good point. I have not...yet worked on the head....

on my 2.8 30v. I did not think these secondary chains had a tensioner as they are so short.

Are they schdueled for replacement by mileage?

No replacement interval. Don't worry they'll start leaking oil before they go bad ;-)

Default Are they at the back of the head, as per Golf 16v etc?

My Oettinger has beautifully machined gears at the cam belt end of the cams mounted on a vernier keyway, so you can adjust the timing between the two cams.

Default Depends which head.....

On the passenger side it's at the back, driver's side it's at the front.

#9 and #10 are the tensioners. 10A is the gasket set that leaks. From the picture it doesn't look like the best gasket set-up...two pieces.
