Default Can carbon monoxide get into the cabin while driving?

I've been smelling what seems to be burned oil when I start up the car in the morning and I know some of these gases are odorless so I want to make sure I'm not breathing this stuff.

Can an Inspection Station test for CO inside the car? other options?

Default Common problem. Leaky valve cover gaskets and/or cam tensioner seals....link inside...

Default shouldn't if your exhaust is in good shape. Don't forget, CO is odorless so if you are smelling

something, that is not it. Have you checked your cam tensioner seals?

Default If you smell oil, it's not exhaust fumes.

As others said, it's likely the valve covers leaking oil onto the hot exhaust. See the link in my signature.

The only plausible way exhaust (from an intact exhaust system) can get into the passenger compartment is if the trunk is open or if the seal is ineffective. I hauled some lumber about 10 miles once with the trunk slightly ajar...smelled some slight fumes, but had a wicked headache for a couple hours afterward...and I don't get headaches. :/

Default That's reassuring ... I know CO is odorless but I figured if one smell can make it into the cabin...

then maybe CO can get in there too and I would not even know. I have not gotten headaches or dizziness or nausea but I do take my daughter to pre-K twice a week and I don't want her breathing this stuff.

Thanks for the info. I have no idea when I'll get to this since I already changed my timing belt.
