Can I start in second gear? Tip 2.7t
Hello,
I enjoy a good 5000 RPM start from time to time, however, if I don't step on it, the first gear seems sooooo slow. Pontiacs G6 go by me at a red light easy.
I chipped my car too (GIAC) and that's nice, but off the line, I don't like it. My previous car (Grand Prix GTP) had much lower gear ratios (1st 2.9:1 & final 2.9:1).
Can the first gear start be improved through VAG-COM? Or can I skip 1st gear altogether and start in 2nd?
2000 A6 2.7t (GIAC), no Tip chip.
Thanks,
M.

1. Starting in second gear would give you a higher gearing and slower acceleration. I suspect that isn't what you want.
2. The only reason I can think of for second gear starts is when you have low traction and a manual transmission.
3. 1st and final are the same ratio? 8o
4. The guy in the G6 (going by you at the red light) should get a ticket for running that RED light!
5. If you want to go faster, maybe you should "step on it."
6. Do you know what you are talking about?

5000 RPM start? As in rev to 5K in neutral then slam it into drive? If so, that's a fuggin' retarded way to kill your transmission dead in no time flat.
Also, numerically *higher* gear ratios will improve acceleration at the expense of top speed and economy. Numerically *lower* gear ratios will do just the opposite and yield you sucky acceleration.

The G6 can have something close to a Corvette motor in it, so dont worry about it, youl never keep up. The A6 is a cruiser more than a light to light blaster. Is ur tranny auto or standard? if ur slammning an auto in gear at 5000 rpms, it wont last.

Me thinks you be thinking of the G8 (a rear wheel drive car) not the G6 (a front wheel drive). The G6 has the same running gear as the Malibu.
I can see making the mistake, as the G8 looks kind of like a G6... on steroids. Much more aggressive in looks and performance, yes the high end DOES get the same running gear as the Corvette. (6.2L V8 engine that produces 415hp and 415lb-ft of torque.)

"1. Starting in second gear would give you a higher gearing and slower acceleration. I suspect that isn't what you want."
I believe the 2.7t engine would have a decent start in 2nd. So I was curious how it would feel.
"2. The only reason I can think of for second gear starts is when you have low traction and a manual transmission."
I have auto tranny, and I believe the TC could allow me some extra RPM in 2nd to have a nice start.
"3. 1st and final are the same ratio? 8o"
Yes.
"4. The guy in the G6 (going by you at the red light) should get a ticket for running that RED light!"
Nobody said running a red light.
"5. If you want to go faster, maybe you should "step on it." "
That's where I push it to 5000 RPM, and I wanted to avoid that. Maybe by matching the ratios of the GTP (1st 2.9:1 and final 2.9:1) in the A6 (2nd 2.0:1 and final 3.5:1) , I was hoping for a better start, w/ lower RPM.
"6. Do you know what you are talking about?"
I do and I probably wasn't explaining myself clearly.

If you're not "stepping on it", why would you expect the car to be fast? Audis tend to have a long throttle pedal, which is to say, you need to push it all the way to the floor to make stuff happen. Otherwise, they barely crack the throttle open and you just cruise along.
If you want a quick launch, you need to mash the pedal to the floor. IMHO, there is nothing wrong with 5krpms. If you want lower revs, you need a diesel.

OK, so on that note, can throttle (maybe programming) be improved to give a torquier start?
Also, I recoded transmission to 00032, and it has the effect of holding 1st longer, when what I'd like instead is to have a choice of not using 1st at all.
So back to my original question, is there a trick for the Tiptronic tranny to start in 2nd?
