Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to be that easy. A swimming control unit would at least allow the car to move.

Default Updates with pic and Video

Hello guys,
Thank you so far for your help and suggestions!
I was unable to pull up the carpet to check, but the carpet is very very dry.
Also I managed to drive my car back to my place now. =)

I took some video and pictures of the Vagcom Transmission page. Of Group 1,2,3
If possible, please give shine some of your light on what things I should look at next.

1) Somehow, Reverse is working perfectly fine!
2) Put into Drive, and the car is like in neutral, I don't feel any gear engagement at all (usually you feel the car wanna move, but I don't feel that at all) Even I waited 1 minute, nothing.
3) I step on the gas to like 1000-1500RPM, nothing, like in neutral.
4) I keep on the gas around 1500RPM for like 5-10 sec, then the car will CHUNK! and the tranny is immediately in LIMB MODE!
5) At this point, from vagcom, my tranny is stuck at 5th gear!
6) On my way home (Very tough), when I am on the highway above 45mph, (coz I am stuck on 5th gear) my car felt like no problem at all. very good acceleration, and speed! (just stuck at 5th gear)
7) I had my window down all the way home, and I don't hear any weird noise.

Good that you got it home! Re-reading this thread and don't see how many miles are on the tranny. Tendency is for them to go out at around 100 - 120K or thereabouts, unless yer lucky. Got my 2K 4.2L for cheap due to bad tranny that went at 118K...right after the PO had the engine replaced (Swapped out the front passenger shaft myself this afternoon w/o removing anything else but the inner boot guard, e.g., no pinch bolt BS to deal with).

Anyway, even though you saw no obvious evidence of fluid leaking from the pan, you should heed 4driver4's advice and check the actual level anyway. Many posts on how to do it properly, and if you're not sure about doing it yerself, find a good indy who can. Otherwise, might start thinking about having that tranny replaced or rebuilt. Supposed to be an outfit somewhere in NJ that is good with rebuilding. Figure at least $3K to replace with a used unit. Mine was $3.3K w/2yr P&L warranty.

Hope someone here can help more...I'm at the limit of what I know about these beastly trannys.

I didn't watch the video, but I can tell you that dry carpet does not mean that the TCU is dry. You must locate and open the plastic box to verify.

I'd test the transmission multifunction switch too.

...and stop driving the car.

Default Took out the TCU

Hello guys,
As recommended by 4Driver4, I took out the TCU today. Everything seems so dry under the carpet!
I open up the TCU plastic box and I see something like dried droplet. Look like Soda.

Here are the pictures.

But they are like DRIED, not like flooded, and I don't see much on the TCU itself. Do you guys think TCU is dead due to those droplet?
BTW< I didn't drink or spill any soda or coffee since I got the car for 2 years or 30K miles.

So what should I check for nice? a broken output speed sensor? but from the Vagcom, the output speed sensor do have output value. XXX RPM.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Open the metal box and pull the guts out. It's probably toast.

Default The guts of TCU

I start to read your mind 4Driver4. =)
I opened up the TCU, and inside, I don't see any soda or any sort.
I did see a little stain on the pins part (inside and outside) So I use cutip to clean them out. I do see yellow stuff on the tip, so that should be soda stain.
Also from the way the box and cable, seems like someone pull out the carpet before! Anyway, from the pic, I don't see anything bad, what should I look for?
Thanks again!
I am going out to try to clean the socket on the wire now. (1 pin at a time... oh boy)

P.S. here are the 2 pictures

Default Maybe not TCU

I just went out in the dark at 40F, and cleaned out the sockets. I plug the TCU back in, but same thing.

1) Put in Reverse Gear, transmission engaged into Gear immediately! Like a normal working car! feather the gas pedal, and the car wanna move backward.
2) Put into Drive Gear, (after .5 to 1 second) I feel a small engagement, then after .5 to 1 second, a harder engagement feeling. Feather the gas pedal, nothing (feel like neutral), more gas to about 1.5K RPM, still nothing.
FYI guys: I changed the transmission fluid and filter myself 2 years ago. I changed the fluid & filter before on my older 1998 A6 2.8L, so I believe I know what I was doing.

Don't wanna damage anything, so I just shut off the car before the tranny goes into LIMB mode again.

So 4Driver4, ask you see, the TCU seems good right? what else?

I do know my car is leaking coolant for 2 years now. The resuvior, the inlet on the top, the resuvior has a crack, so I know it leaks slowly. will that cause problem? it is been leaking for 2 years!
BTW, usually only when the coolant get really hot and presurized, so as soon as it leaks out, it dries up and leave WHITE spots all over.
