Default Cat problem - code 1552

Six weeks ago, CEL appears. Told it's code 1552, a heater sensor on the right bank cat. Indie tech suggests clearing the code and see what happens. Two weeks later CEL comes back, same code. Recommends replacing right side cat at $800 with labor. Orders part, does not clear CEL. Next day, CEL goes away, not to be seen since. I haven't replaced the part yet. I really trust my tech, but he seems a little unsure. Any thoughts? TIA.

Default Unsure? No surprise there.

A CEL code is a good starting point in diagnosis. Unfortunately, something like a random OXS code can turn into a guessing game. This is generally more a factor of the complexity of the car than anything else.

Verify that code because if its p-1552 that they told, it just doesnt compute.

Default I think that you may have misinterpreted your tech.

I believe that he retrieved a code with his (VAS) 1552 (the old factory diagnostic tool), which was giving some code involving one of the heated O2 sensors on the right side. There is no 1552 code involving anything to do with O2 sensors. Ask again and see if you can get a little more info, like the exact code number.

Personally, I think a little more diagnostic time is in order before I would replace a catalytic converter. Having your own diagnostic tool would be a big help and save you a lot of money.

BTW, depending on your mileage, a catalytic converter would be covered on the emissions warranty, which may still be in effect on your A6.<ul><li><a href="http://shadetreesoftware.com">ProDiag link</a></li></ul>
