Default Change oil every 5K miles

My dealership has started to recommend oil changes every 5000 miles (whether you use synthetic or not), even though Audi scheduled maintenance only dictates every 10000 miles (2001 A6 2.7T). He said they've started to see lots of engine failures around 50K-60K miles, due to sludge build-up in the oil. I don't really understand all the oil/viscosity/etc issues, but it has something to do with the amount of sulfer in our gas (versus in Europe). That, and the climate extremes here in Minnesota.

I think that this is complete bull. I had an S4 for three years, used Amsoil and always followed recommended oil changes prescribed in the manual. Never had any problems.

5K, synthetic, cheap insurance. I have heard of some, just changing the filter at 5K and oil at 10K

Default The Oil is the life blood of your engine. Are they paying for it?

If you use dino oil, every 3k is a good time to change it. If you use a commercial synthetic like Mobil 1 or Syntec, then 5k is good too. For higher quality synthetics like Amsoil or Redline, 7-10k is no problem.

Default I agree. I spoke to two seperate techs they agree that 10k

oil changes is unwise, espically with a 2.7. One told me that he has also seen quite a few trans failures north of 60k because the trans fliud was not changed. Hmmmm

Default Your "buried" comment re trans fluid is another good point.

There has been a lot of guff flying about the "lifetime" fill. Fortunately, PaulW (S8 forum)seems to have some sensible ideas about it.

For example

Default If you use Mobil 1, you'll never have sludge build ups

The 4.2 motor has an 8 quart capacity....another reason why you don't have to change it as often as 5K miles. My 97 has a recommendation of 7.5K miles, I use synthetic oil (Mobil 1, let's not start a conversation on synthetic oil) and change it 7.5-10K miles. That's about 3 times a year for me.

Sludge build up using synthetic? I highly doubt it, most likely it cleans every bit of sludge out of there.

Default Use amsoil..get new engine!!

I suspect AMSOIL would be VERRY interested in some objective proof of engine failure due to sludge buildup during normal engine oil change intervals recommended by engine manufacturer.

Also...AMSOIL has their trigard system with an amsoil air filter, oil filter, and bypass oil filter where you in essence don't change your oil on a schedule (ok, every 100K miles!) but only by oil analysis.

If sludge is building up in audi engines on synthetic oil...something is wrong with the engines.
