Hey guys - The check engine light came on in my '02 S6 Avant. The dealer says its the charcoal canister (emissions related). Over $600 to replace. They ordered the part. Is it difficult to remove the old and install the new myself? Should I leave it to the professionals? Would love to be able to do it myself. Any help is appreciated.

Having just pulled the '02 4.2's fuel tank myself and having had to disconnect the charcoal canister's vent lines in the process, said canister will be found under the rear of the car specifically under the spare tire well.

There are three nuts that attach the black plastic pie plate cover to the spare tire well. Remove them and the canister will be found lurking therein. It's held in place with three bolts and there are three vent lines plumbed to it (two going to the front passenger side of the fuel tank where the fuel filter is located and one going to the fuel filler assembly in the rear passenger side wheel well).
