Default CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON

I have a 2001 A6 2.7T which I was pulling onto the interstate yesterday, revving the engine up to about 5000 rpms, when suddenly my check engine light appeared. It has stayed on since then, reappearing each time I restart the car. The high-revving seemed to cause it to light up. Does any one know what the check engine light usually entails? I recently (about a thousand miles ago) got an oil change and a tune-up inspection (all fluids were topped off and all filters and such were checked). Everything seemed ok. A few months ago when I bought the car, my roommate and I noticed a faint smell of oil when we drove the car rigorously for a short period of time. We knew that Audi's V6 engines are prone to PCV problems which causes the seals to blow and thus causes an oil leak. Could these be related? I actually hardly ever drive the car hard, revving it up to 5000 rpms only a handful of times in the six months I have owned it. Anyone have any ideas?
