So I'm driving home from work and the car feels funny...every few seconds it seems to hesitate/decelerrate a little. Thought that it was just the cold here today. Then CHECK ENGINE light comes on and FLASHES. I pull over immediately and shut the engine off and thought I smelled a burnt smell. Had to call a tow and get it into the shop. Any idea what it could be? I have a feeling it's serious. :-(

Hope it's not serious. Are you still under warranty, or did you buy it early in the model year? Good luck.

...on a 99 a6 wagon I had, turned out to be plug wires. $100 fix. Scared the bajeesus out of me as I too had the flash and my temp started going up as well. No problems after plug wires.

Crankcase breather system's valve was fronzen shut from the cold weather we've been having this last couple days! Basically engine pressure couldn't be released and blew oil into the cats and that's the burning smell I smelt. Fixed now. Whew! Glad it wasn't anything major.
