Default Check engine light question, I'm puzzled!

I have a 98 A6 2.8 fwd sedan and the check engine light came on the other day when I was out of town. Car drove fine and I checked the oil level which was at the low mark but still okay. The car had about 3.5 miles since the last oil change. I drove the car home about 300 miles with the light check engine light ON. Yesterday I took it in to get the emissions test done and it passed with no problems even though the tech said that with the check engine light ON the car would NOT pass emissions. Then they put it up on the rack and did an oil change. When the car was taken off the rack and started up, the check engine light was OUT. Any ideas here? I was under the impression that the check engine light was only emissions related. Is it possible that it also comes on due to slightly low oil level?? Any help, input, or ideas would be appreciated. Would the ECU still have the Engine Fault Code stored even the light is out? Thanks for the help in advance.

Default Yes, ECU will store the code, no it's not only emmissions related, it could be something as simple

as a loose gas cap. Low oil level would show up on your information screen. Could have something to do with your transmission as well. You need to pull the code and see what is is, you might try the regional forums to see if anybody in your area has a Vag Com and would pull the code for you. Good Luck!
