I am thinking about using a apr chip in my 02 a6 4.2. Has any one heard or know of the performance gains by chipping the car. Trying see if its worth the money, and also looking for feedback on apr chips.
Thanks

If you must have additional power, get the ECU chip along with the Giac Tranny chip and get rid of the stock exhaust. Free that V8 up.
02 4.2 you may not feel a great difference with the tranny chip, don't know for certain. Use search to see what others say about the 2002 4.2

was noticeable, but it depends on your expectations. It is certainly not the type of noticeable you'll feel with a 2.7T chip, but I think it was worth the $400 I paid. I don't have any experience with APR's chip, but I would expect it to be similar. Maybe APR can give you a money-back guarantee to help you take the plunge. I'd ask them if that's a possibility...

When worded in this manner, chipping a 4.2 may fall out of the running pretty quickly.
Have you done the sway bars using the H-sport upgrade? Ready for a tire upgrade? Have a set of dedicated snows? Need a brake job soon (add that money to your normal brake job and you can upgrade)? What kind of exhaust are you running?
And so on...
Something to think about.

Chips developed their reputation on turbo cars, where simple tuning could open the wastegate later, and add correspondingly more fuel, resulting in dramatic power improvements.
I wont comment on reliability.
But in a normally aspirated motor, there is nto much they can do. And what they can do, may cause driveability or durability problems. For instance, they can advance timing (ping). Or ease off the knock sesor (ping again). Or dump in more fuel( say adios to your cat, or at least emissions compliance).
but they can't cram another 25% air and fuel in, like you can on a twin-turbo 2.7.
Save your money.
Maybe a freer flowing exhaust, but even that will likely trade low-end torque (whcih is very useful) for hgih end power (whcih provides a more impressive number that you only use on the track, at redline).
