Any advice as to experience or comparison of dunlop winter sport m2 vs. michelin arctic alpin for use on a 2.7? tire rack has michelins about $20 cheaper.

I can't compare thoses 2 tires but I can tell you that I have Pirelli 210 Wintersport and verry satisfied with them. They are the tire recomended by Audi and Jaguar dealer for their clients. On a winter tire test made in Quebec by a reputable auto guide, the Pirelli's end up with the best marks than others. Hope this will help your choice of winter tires.

I have M2 s on an A6 2.7T and Pirelli 210 on an S6 Avant. Both are grabbin fools in snow.
I thought I'd be able to come to a preference for one set over the other when we took both cars to the NEQ winter driving school, but I couldn't. Conditions on the skidpad were such that people had trouble standing and the cars took off and handled without problem. Hill and dale and around pylons varying ice, snow, packed, slicked each tire set was fully acceptable. I'm sure there are differences but neither was found lacking. Properly inflated and in appropriate sizes these were fine. Maybe after many more miles I'd have some distinctions to make. With what I know now, once again I'd go for the Dunlops on the 2.7T.

Re: choice of snow tires?
fwiw, I have Michelin Pilot Alpins on my 2.7, and have been very happy with them (I live outside Boston) -- they handle decently on dry roads, aren't too noisy, and ride quality is comporable to the Goodyear Eagle Tourings that came standard. We just put Arctic Alpins on my wife's Volvo (size 195-65-15), and the one thing I would note is that they're a bit noisy on wet roads -- kind of a high-pitched whine. I'd guess that with quattro, any of the tires you're considering should be fine. Good luck!

Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22s
I previously posted a review of these (search for "Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22" and you'll find it), but they are great in the snow when coupled with Quattro power. What I really like about them given the mild winter we have had in Chicagoland this year is that they are a good performance tire for the dry and wet, too. I don't feel like I've strapped snow boots to my car at all. Notice them on quite a few BMW 3-series and Acura TLs around here.
