Default Most older race cars were RHD because of the direction of most tracks. European tracks were

usually run clockwise, and this gave the driver the advantage of being on the inside of a turn.

Most Italian sports cars up to the early 50's were right hand drive, even though technically the country drives on the same side of the road as North Americans.

Default :) And it's been theorized that the reason we do it differently on the street is because

back in the days of wagons, the driver of the team had to make sure their wagon would clear an oncoming wagon - as well as operate the brake with their left hand, leaving their usually stronger right hand with the reins.
