coded keys and little plastic not coded key?
I am getting no answers from the allroaders, just wondering if somebody here might know the answer.
Some time ago I saw a story on 60min or 20/20 about people stealing a car with a coded key system like we have. Pretty much the trick was to order a replacement key from a dealer using a VIN code. They are not supposed to do this but I guess it happens. (also see: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4265482/)
Now the question. When I don't want to take the key fob I use the little plastic key to lock and also start the car. I doubt that the little plastic key has the coding chip in it (or am I wrong?). Do you guys know how this would work with the plastic key, is the car still protected with the coding? Thanks.

Can't happen on your allroad
To code a key, you need the car and a secret code that the dealers don't give out.
All keys that you want to be coded must be recoded everytime you code one new key. If it's let out, it won't work anymore.
The ECU is also part of the recoding process, so if the ECU is ever changed, your car won't start either.

Re: the little plastic key does have the imobilizer chip in it
I have the little plastic key that I carry in my wallet in case of an emergency. It does open all doors and turns the ignition but will not start the vehicle. Did the dealer forget to activate the immobolizer code in this key? My vehicle is a 2001 a6 2.7 TIP.
Thanks

Mine does start the car, you have to be careful though not to break it. I have an 03, maybe older models do not have the chip in it or yours has to be activated.
