Default Cold Air Intakes - Worth it or not?

Usually one of the first easy mods I do when I get a new car is a Cold Air Intake to free up some power. I searched and it seems that there's very little discussion about it here on the A6 boards. Since I am a 2.7T noob, is this because the stocker is just fine? I did find a couple of after market intakes on the web. Is it worth it to pick up some HP and Tourque? Or is just doing a low restriction filter like K & N enough? Or lastly don't bother, because it's not worth it.

Thanks for your help.

Default The concensus is that your money is best spent elsewhere.

The stock intake is fine on the 2.7. There is a mod you can do to the air box by cutting a hole in the bottom section that will give you all the benefits of the cold air intake systems on the market provided you use a K&N drop-in. One of them isn't really a cold air intake because you do away with the air box and the cold air plumbing from the front of the car and the cone filter sits in the hot engine bay. Not a good design IMHO. Another sits inside the stock air box with a foam element air filter. That alone should tell you that the stock system is pretty good. Hope this helps.

Default the performance gains are marginal...but the sound is sweet (atleast on my 2-8)

...it sounds much more agressive than before...if you want email me i have s ound clip from inside the car... if you vent it properly (ie a heat shield some ducting and a little blower) keeps you from sucking in hotter air

Default no benefit at all unless you're going to do substantial mods...K&N counterproductive too...

With a K&N you get slightly better breathing (but not better than a CLEAN OEM filter) with the downside of substantially more dirt being allowed into your engine. No thanx.

For the price of a K&N and the oiling kit you can afford to buy a brand new OEM filter every 5-10k miles. Sure, you might lose out on low single digit HP gains, but your engine will be better protected and you won't risk potentially roaching your MAF with the filter oil.

Cheers,

Default Darintake

Look up the Darintake. It's a mod for the stock airbox. Makes a tad more power and you can really hear the turbos after you do it. I did it on my A6 2.7T and have had no problems yet.
