I've always thought the A6 looks best in a dark color (e.g., black, ming blue, racing green) since it hides the front and rear bumper seams nicely yet still shows off the car's attractive lines.
Bright red would look great but attracts unwanted attention of the revolving-light kind while you're trying to make good time. Again, the darker colors seem less conspicuous.
Ultimately, you're right--it's a very subject choice. Look at as many as you can and you'll reach a decision. As for me, I ordered my 2.7T in Ming Blue. Good luck!

The colour was Nemo Blue and the car was an S6 4.2 at the Tokio Motor Show. Presently the color is offered exclusively on the S6 although in Germany and Switzerland you can usually override colour restrictions by ordering your with the Quattro GmbH treatment. All it takes is money.
