Default The Company You Keep

Consumer Reports reviewed the Allroad vs the Acura MD-X, the Lexus RX300, and the Volvo Cross-Country, and won the overall rating, but because of the A6 frequency of repair record, they cannot recommend it. The A6 Avant ranks second to the MB E320 4Matic overall among all vehicles, but is not recommended either.

The MB, Acura, Lexus Toyota Landcruiser, and Chevrolet Suburban LT are the recommended SUVs or wagons.

Default I wonder what the reliability issues are...

The current A6 (C5 chassis?) was a CU recommended vehicle until the 2.7T and 4.2 engines were introduced. I wish CU would break down the reliability issues by engine type. On the other hand, maybe it was the fuel-sender problem that did them in.

Default Re: I wonder what the reliability issues are...

The 98 A6 and the 00 2.7T are used cars to avoid, and the A6s for all years had fuel, electrical and hardware all below average or much worse than average.

From the Annual CR Auto Issue.

Treat Consumer Reports like we are now treating the trolls here, ignor them, cancel subscriptions!

Default I'll tell you what the reliability issues are...

1. The brakes have a long, squishy entry followed by powerful retardation, all taking place with too little change in pedal effort.

2. An intermittent hum from driver's side of the car (towards the doors). Not too loud so that the road noise masks the whole thing if the car is going any faster than 45 mph. But the sound is definitely there. It seems to jive with the exhaust note but the location isn't the same and neither is the tone.

3. Homelink does not accept or remember input from my gate opener.

4. A pillar still buzzes.

5. Fan makes Siren Noise

6. My car idles rough.

7. The car goes out of alignment every 1K miles

all this for car that has only 7K miles. Enough?

Default Homelink

If you're gate opener uses a modern auto-changing code you need to go through a few extra steps to get it programmed. I have the same problem with the wife's Town & Country. It looks like it would be easier to do with two people, and involves running back and forth from the vehicle to the closer receiver unit, etc.

Default A Powerful Force, Like It or Not

Isuzu and Honda know the sales effect negative review can have on one of their products. Audi's situation isn't that bad, but it undoubtedly has to be a tiebreaker with a buyer looking at similarly pegged products.

The repair frequency is based on consumer questionaires of their subscriber base. It is not a limited or self-selected sample, annd is arguably a greater number than what is obtained from aficianados on a website.

These complaints need to be heeded. My local dealer has an auto loan program administered through Infiniti, and used by them for all their model lines. It is a major inconvenience to not have alternative transportation when your car is in the shop, and I'd personally want a better repair record if I'm shelling out 50K + for a car.

98.5 2.8 A4
97 Outback, hope to replace with A6 Avant or S6 Avant

Default I think you have a Frontrak like me....

My car has a rough idle at low speed as well although it improved somewhat when I had the right-front Oxygen Sensor replaced. I also noticed that brake issue you mention but have gotten used to it.

It's interesting that in my 17 years of owning Hondas, I never had a single complaint or warranty item to deal with. What is also true about the Hondas is that they are much less fun to drive and are low on the amenities quotient.

The jury is still out for me as to how this all balances out but I still think that my A6 is a hoot to drive.

Homelink® and auto-chamging door codes: The instructions in owner's manual worked PERFECTLY for me.

I agree... even with the problems I like the car. Check out my new post on S80 vs. A6
