Did you throw it around corners, did you do various standing starts?, or did just drive the car around with just a few accelerations here and there?.
Unless you "drive" the S6 with enthusiasm, and use its potential, in other words if you're just cruising around, then yes you would not find much difference.
Also, you mention Manchester,in England? I assume you live in the States? Thus you would have been driving a RHD S6 versus your LHD 4.2? then not only you were in a different environment, where you may not be familiar with the roads, but the steering being on the other side may have also perturbed your judjement?
Unless of course you want to convince yourself there are no real differences.

It can work both ways. ;^)
I think you are both right.... If you drive the S6 aggressively for a period of time, then drive the A6 4.2 sport, you will notice the limits have closed in on you. Alternatively, driving the 4.2 as it was meant to be driven, then drive the same way in the S6, you will not feel there is a large difference.
Only the 4.2 owner who wants to drive like an S6 should be disappointed with their purchase! I find the 4.2 enough for all but the few "hot rod" moments in my life, which (not being an autocross driver) are fairly rare. But, if the S6 were available an in my price range, I'd seriously have considered it. Then I would be spoiled!
