Default Converting 2002 S6 Avant from Whale to WhaleShark!

Not a killer shark, as it is >4,000 pounds!
1. I put 18x8 rims and 255-35-18 Toyo T1R tires
Big improvment over Conticontactsport all season tires. Quieter and slightly better turn-in without too much increased road harshness.
2. Hsport sway bars, front/Rear. Big difference in turn-in, and now I can make the rear rotate easily, while before it was not very responsive. Thanks all for suggestions. Next on to the Vagcom shift code modification.

I do not intend to track the car, as I have two SCCA race cars for that, but compared to my 1993 urS4 and just sold 1996 urS6 both with over 320 wheel horsepower and torque, the S6V8 is as quick under 4,000 rpm, but looses on the high-horsepower end where the torque of the I5 wins when the RS2 parts start loving 25-28 psi boost! And the mileage difference is amazing. The I-5, being almost half the engine displacement while producing more HP/torque, gets 19-20 mpg driven aggressively, while the whaleshark V8 gets 15-16 with less spirited driving.

The S6V8 suspension is superior, but with 300 portly extra pounds does not handle as well as the lighter, 10 years older cars. I also have a 95.5 Avant which handles better than the Sedans, so I would expect the same applies to the V8 sedan compared to the Avant, as the rear weight bias is an improvement. The HP2 brakes are over-boosted and difficult to modulate as well as the Brembo urS4, but a big improvement over previous Audi brakes.

The 95.5 Avant has a Torsen V8 rear, the urS4 will soon have one installed which provides the best rear end traction control.

I enjoy the quiet V8 over the Stromung I-5 which had a noise that commanded respect. Of course the lights are a huge improvement, but I miss the Recaro sport seats, which seem to be quite rare on the S6V8 Avant.

This is the first Automatic trans car in my life, and the Tip is nice. I still prefer the standard trans for real car control, and have a Hans Klug rebuilt 6 speed to go into one of the I-5's.

Following pictures are Audi content, Audi race car was a 1.8 fwd ex-TAP factory car still raced by Colin Cohen (ex-race partner who moved to Dallas, and RS2urq in shake-down at Summit Point) other cars not shown (would be OT-Off topic) are Korman wide-bodied BWW 323i and BabyGrand R1 powered cars.

We had a poll recently and it seemed more race drivers own Audis than most other cars. Non-technical poll.

Default Interesting, I'm headed in the opposite direction

I have the Toyo T1-Rs on my car and I have been underwhelmed to say the least. I've had 2 fail without any abuse (one delaminated, the other had a failed valve stem). Plus they are *heavy* and increase the unsprung weight of the car. These tires have actually made me toy with the idea of going back to A/S tires full time.

I'm also considering reversing the tip recode. Although I like the ability to tip-on-demand, it's confusing to others who drive my car, and I'm not sure I like the changes to the default D mode behavior that seem to be a side effect.

Default Toyos good value at $165/ea I am trying them out Your comments are valid!

and valve stem failure does not relate to tire performance. Heavy? Try Khumos.

If I was concerned about unsprung weight, I would not have the Hartmann RS4 closes, but would have alum hat rotors, and Forged aluminum $1500/ea rims. It is all about bling, and real street-realized return. I don't doubt what you offer, as my BMW race car has 3 piece BBS rims which are lighter than Nitrogen along with Aluminum hatted Wilwood hats/calipers and aluminum suspension pieces the difference is amazing...but a street 4,000 lb Ark???

I am sure some others will say I missed the mark by not putting coilovers, shocks/ brakes, etc, but for once trying to keep stock items for this suv.

I have not done the Tip re-coding, and your comments are quite alerting for me to reconsider that option. As far as shift speed, again, I am not trying to outshift a F1 Ferrari, and if there is an improvement that does not affect reliability, I might consider.

I have Mich PS2 on sedan, superior tire, but at $100+ more, I will not be pushing this car as hard. Delamination is critical QC issue. My tire source likes these tires, as they are "rounder" than most requiring less balancing.

Thanks for your input, valid comments.

Default I liked the T1-S when I ran them years ago for street class in auto-x.

For me, they were the best tire short of the Michelin Pilot Sports which were $100 more, like yours. Considering I went through 3-4 sets of tires a year from daily driving and driving events, price was very important.

As for the delamination, I never had a problem. But then again, I was driving a 2300lb Saturn SC2...

Considering the S6 will never handle like a true sports car I think you made a fine choice of tire.

Default T1-S and T1-R and substantially different IMHO

As you say the T1-S was a decent tire as street tires go on the track. The T1-R seems to have a little less grip and the sidewalls are softer.

I ran several sets of the T1-S on my 2.7T and liked them.
