Do a search for "lawnmower syndrome"

It's not so much about how long between starts, but rather the start briefly thing that is the issue.

Wow thanks for the tip - I had never heard of that before. It makes a lot of sense to me, and in fact, I don't think I mentioned this, but I did press the gas pedal while cranking on those final 2 attempts, where it finally came back to life. That is mentioned in one of the hits I got searching for lawn mower syndrome as something that can help...but I didn't know the significance until now, it was something I did and then forgot.

In hindsight, it seems if I had just cranked it for long enough on the first attempt it probably would have started for me.
