Default couple oil questions

Just changed the oil in my A6 for the first time and have a couple questions. I am currently using 10w-30 in preparation for winter... is this a bad idea on a 2.7T and should i switch to 5w-30? also, i put 6 quarts in and when i check the dipstick, the oil is on the lower end of the acceptable region, should i add a little more or is this normal? Thanks

Default First, how cold will it get (worst case) for winter driving?

I use 5W-30, and I do a lot of skiing. I want good oil-flow right away on start-up. The label on the oil should give a temperature range.

I find my 2.7T will take 7.4 gts/oil-change with filter. The manual says to keep the oil level between the two "centered" marks on the dip-stick, but do not go over or below the two "extreme" marks. I believe the book says to check the oil when warm, but after the car has "sat" for a while. Alow a moment or two after adding oil to check the dip-stick again.

I usually end up "topping-off" my oil-change about a day or two after rather than trying for 7.4 gts re-fill right away.

Default If it gets super cold, I would use 0w or 5w, but 10w isn't going to hurt you.

Just let the thing heat up. The car takes 6.9qts, I put in 7 and it is still a touch low.

Default Audi changed their recommendation to 0W-30 in 2001

For cold start-up, regardless of ambient temperature, 0W flows quicker to the turbo bearings than 5W, 10W or 15W. Start up is where most engine wear occurs. Audi seems especially concerned about turbo bearings because they are relatively small compared to other engine components. Since Mobil 1, Amsoil, Castrol make a 0W-30 which is easy to get, why not use one of those. Incidentally, Mobil 1 makes a 0W-40 which meets even tougher specifications.
