Cranking the engine to TDC - what size socket for a6 avant?
The write up in tech articles says to use a 19mm 12 point, but the one on my car is much bigger - does anybody know the size?
Also how important is the crank lock - it seems like a major pain in the *** to get to.

24mm IIRC. Crank lock is not that bad to get to. Use it.
Look up at the crank lock hole from between the sway bar and sub-frame, then reach around from behind the subframe to get to the hole.
Ignoring the importance of the crank lock in alignment for the belt, how are you going to change the seal or inspect the crank sprocket without removing the crank bolt?
