Default Cruise Control Problem: Fixed w/ switch adjustment? But maybe not... still intermittent

Thanks again to all for the great archives that saved you from answering my 1st Q about my balky cruise control on my '01 Avant (65k miles).

It's been failing to re-engage after being shut off by a brake tap intermittently/frequently since last Sept. or so. Sometimes it won't come on at all, sometimes it works fine.

Based on the archives posts, I adjusted the 2-stage switch over the brake pedal to get a firmer seat of the brake pedal arm onto the switch (firmer push into the "closed" position (piston pushed fully "in", away from the firewall as the brake pedal is released) indicating that the brake is not "on"). Still no issues/probls. re: brake light coming on too late, it works OK.

I gave it about 1/2 to 3/4 turn clockwise last Thursday. Voila, function comes back on the Cruise, working great ---- for 3 days ... on Sunday, it's balking again.

I adjusted it again today (another 1/2 turn clockwise, brake lights still going on OK, not too late). And it's working better again, on a few short drives I'd say it's working around 80%+ . I use it a lot because it helps me keep my speed in a sane area (I'm not reckless but I do tend to wander 10+ over often).

If this doesn't fix it, it's a trip to the dealer where my extended service contract should cover a repair if a part's no good.

Any thoughts on whether this is perhaps the bad contact switch (the one by the brake pedal), as opposed to a bad stalk?

Since it's intermittent (for now) I hate to be playing games at the dealer with them searching for the problem, esp. when I'm on the hook for diagnostic time (and we'll see how they are about dealing w/ my extended service co., which is a well-known one that's been easy to deal with on my 2 minor claims (~$500) in the first 13 months of coverage (1 yr., 11 months to go).

OTOH I have a few months before any long drives coming up so I can watch it & see what it does...

Cheers & thanks,
Jon

Default Mine was intermittent just like yours...

A new module fixed the problem.
Here's what the old one looked like (perfect as far as I could see).

Default Thanks...Can anyone confirm that '01s don't have a separate module (if I read archives correctly)?

Thanks for your note, I thought someone said that the 99s have the separate module but the '01s do not (ECU and brake switch & stalk switches only).

Can anyone confirm this?

Fiddling w/ the brake switch clearly made some difference so I'm just speculating that that might be the issue?

Thanks for your note,
Jon

Default p.s. where is that module located in your car?

I can always look for something like it in mine.

Thanks,
Jon
