Default CV Boot Replacement

torn boot, no noise
2003 A6 3.0 81,000 miles. Should I replace the boot only and or the cv or do the entire axle as suggested by local mechanic ?
I would like to keep for another 81,000 miles !

Boots only, do both. Relube the arm and rod ball joints while you are in there.

Default Bernie! Did your wallet get fat? Why fix something that isn't broken yet? I agree there's no need

to replace the joint (unless it has been damaged) but why do the second boot if it hasn't failed yet? Granted, it is likely to fail at some point in the future, but that could be several thousand miles off...

Default You don't need to replace the "bad" boot either..

Just fill it with snake oil :P

Accepted as such! A dirty job, especially after the boot breaks, and 80K is about it. A good twofer!

Default Dirty, indeed. Truth be told, my driver's side blew no more than two weeks after

the passenger side cracked.

I'd still wait to do the second, only because there's no real time gain to doing it at the same time as the first, but that's just my thinking.

Default Re: CV Boot Replacement

Just did my outer drivers side boot. Got a replacement boot kit, removed the outer c/v joint and cleaned with a degreaser, inspected the ball bearing and races in the c/v for pitting and corrosion, and reassembled. It's a ugly job but I followed Kris's tech article and it work like a charm. Thx Kris.
