Dealer Says Bad O2 sensor
2002 3.0 A6 Avant
The Dealer wants $779 to replace an O2 sensor that they say is bad. Happened right after they replaced the driver side cat. Bank 2 Sensor 1. This seems way out of line price wise, they said 4 hours of labor and want $180 for the part 06C906265B.
Questions,
Is the sensor behind the Cat easy enough to replace that I could do it on jack stands in my garage?
Should I use some anti seize on the threads?
The web keeps telling me that the part number they gave me is for the front left sensor. Are they the same?

omg u gotta be kidding...lift car, yank, unbolt, replace...
finnish says jackstands i agree..
this might be a 150$ or less job... forget 8 benjies'...
im guessing the extra $ is due to further data logging etc to make sure its reporting OKay, and then a bottle of KristAlll.... to celebrate a working car?

That's way to high for labor, part price is about right...
The O2s aren't fun, FWIH...but a dealer tech should be able to knock all FOUR out in less than an hour. Find a reputable independent mechanic near you for a second opinion.
If you do them yourself and have a 2.7T, look into the O2s from <a href="http://vastperformance.com/products/exhaust.php">VAST</a>

Yes, can be done DIY, find someone w/ experience on your exact motor (3.0) to be sure
For example on the 4.2, you have to work from both above and below and can just barely get them, while basically sitting on top of the motor and with the oil filter out on the passenger side.
I see a 2.7T post, but try to get confirmation from a fellow 3.0 owner.
Anti seize, yes, but only if you are really careful. Just a tiny bit worked into the threads. If you get it onto the sensor tip, it will likely destroy it over time. Figure when you insert them into the threads it will be basically a blind fit by feel, so you don't want it to get on your fingers and then onto the sensor tip.
Mail order for Bosch/Audi OEM wqith the factory connector, maybe you can take 20% off the price you have if you shop it a lot. You can go cheaper with generic Bosch if you are willing to splice in the connector; I wouldn't personally but that's all some can afford.

Re: Bank 2 Sensor 1 is the driver's side pre-cat sensor. Seems like I've heard somewhere that they
My investigation points to it being the pre-cat on the drivers side. If so, it may be good news. The car is in the shop after the body shop got done. Some lady made an illegal left in front of us and we munched up the front left. So, if its that one, we may be able to get her insurance co to pay for it like everything else they have been paying for over the last 3 months.
The tech's kept saying rear sensor, but the part number, the labor quote, and the Bank2 Sensor1 talk point to the front sensor. Here's crossing fingers. Waiting to hear back from both the dealer and the ins. adjuster.
