$5. Worth of snake oil will eliminate 1/3 of the bill.

Default Either do the work yourself, find a good indie or get rid of the car.

The front brake hoses can be really bad on these cars. The picture shows the cracking on a couple I took off right after I bought the car. And the car had obviously recently had a complete brake job! The cracks were on the underside where they weren't easily noticable.

I'd do a complete control link kit rather than replace individual pieces like that. Also, if you are going to replace the prop shaft seals then you should replace the CV-boots at the same time. They will go soon.

It is possible to get the ABS module repaired for less.

Basically, those prices represent the cost of replacing each thing individually. But there is a lot of duplication in that work so that together those prices aren't reasonable.

Default Ditto.

I actually don't like braided hoses on normal street cars. The braiding hides any internal craking. They can fail without the failure being visible. If you use braided hoses then you need to replace them periodically as preventative maintanence. Only people with track cars or serious performance street cars are going to do that.

Default Dirt gets in the braids. the hose bends and flexes. The braids wear out..

Not to mention, there's nothing keeping the elements away from the inner sanctity of the brake hose..

lemme guess, you have non-rubber coated braided lines on your car?

Default Prolly lots of DIY in my future...but I'll disagree on

getting rid of the car making sense. Here's my thinking: $5400 (if the dealer were to do the work) would fix all these items and give me a car that cruises beatifully, handles well, has plenty of zip (it's a 2.7T) and fills all my needs. Tough to find another car that does all that for $5700.

That said, I'll be doing all this for less than 1/2 dealer cost.

Default Scary, eh?

I think that they were about to go at any moment. Something like that could be fatal if you were pushing hard.

The fail on the back side where you really cannot see them. I would think that they will all be failing about now. It is just a matter of how many full lock turns of the wheel someone applies.
