Dealing w/ Dealer Curiosity and Recent Experience
I recently brought my 4.2 in for its 20k service plus the M&B of a new spare tire. While handing over my keys, another gentleman was dropping his car off as well. The difference was that he didn't have an appointment. When told that the schedule was full for the day, the guy just flipped out. Started in with the old "I've never had to make an appointment before" nonsence. After being farily beligerent towards the service rep (who remarkably kept his cool), he stormed out promising to go to another dealer (is this any of you guys, by the way).
To this gentleman: Instead of being such a toolbox, just make an appointment next time. How hard is it to pick up the phone?
I'm curious to find out if anyone else has been able to just show up at the dealer and drop off their car with no appointment (emergency problems aside). Also, when making an appointment, what sort of lead time does the dealer usually need to get you in (it's usually 5-10 days for me)?
By the way, as usual, my dealer did a great job with the car and it was ready by 1pm that day.

It's been my experience that you can indeed 'just show up'. You take your
chances in a situation like that and yes IMO the guy was a 'toolbox'. If they're not that busy they will fit you in. If busy, well you saw what happens. I usually call and I'm in the same or next day.

Depends on the dealer...
The one across town is established and and high volume and I need an appointment. The new one down the street from me is low volume (for the moment) so I can just drop in.

Easy to get an appointment
My Audi dealer is Stoddard Imported Cars in Willoughby Oh. If I have problem, they ask "when can you bring it in." I live 70mi. from Stoddard, and they will schedule a driver with an A6 loaner within a day or two for non emergencies to pick up my car. If there is an emergency, they'll have a loaner ready for me to pick up, or they will flat bed the car. I've never had to wait. Doesn't hurt to give your dealer "thumbs up" with Audi either when you have a good experience.
The dealer in Erie, PA Roth Audi, has up to a week (7 days) to schedule. With a previous 98 A6, the service was horrible.

Leith Audi varies in NC varies.
For scheduled maintenance, I've had to wait two weeks for an appointment. For annoying problems, I am normally in within a week. For a quick oil change (on my dime at 5000 mi intervals), I can get in the next day.
But, I was there today, and they had just hired four new techs. I had to go in to have them hook up the computer and read the part number for my dash. The center display fades in hot weather and becomes unreadable. They are preordering the part so it will be there next week for my appointment to have warranty problems fixed. It's good to see them look ahead like this. Maybe they will get better.
