Default I can't comment on the A6 4.2, but the S6 is a superb car

I've never driven an A6 4.2, but I just bought a 2002 S6 for my wife and I am thoughly impressed. I don't care much for tip cars, but the torque of the 340hp 4.2 makes the auto much more pleasent. The handling balance of the S suspension is near perfect and the brakes are excellent.

The S comes nearly loaded which is nice you won't be hunting around for the options combo you want, but they are so rare that you must be willing to travel to get the car you want at a good price. Make sure you get one that has the sport seats. The regular A6 seats were a no cost option on the S6. I can't imagine why anyone would order an S6 that way but there are a few out there.

Having the huge Avant cargo area is a big bonus and IMO the C5 Avant looks better than the sedan, but it really comes down to a personal perference decision. The added weight of the Avant body probably negates most of the extra 40hp. They are only separated by a couple of 10ths 0-60 and 1/4 mile.

Default What's the S6's 0-60 time?

I thought it was a hell of a lot better than the 4.2's.

Default S6 = 6.5, A6 4.2 = 6.7

1/4 mile, S6 = 14.5 and A6 4.2 = 15.0

0-60 (per 2002 model guide info) 6.5seconds (S6) vs. 6.7 seconds (4.2)

Default coming from 300hp 4.2 but in A8

I have to say I didn't notice much of a difference from engine point of view when I got the S6. Major reason for me to go with the S instead of regular 4.2 A6 was that it was easier to find a S6 that matched my requirements and also that already the 00 S6 had some stuff that was not given to the other models until the 02 facelift.

Handling of the S6 is still pretty crappy so you would have to do something about the chassis if yo ulike driving fast also when the road turns.
