Did my dealer fool me?

Re: Did my dealer fool me?
On both of my Audi purchases (98 A6 2.8 and the 01 2.7T that just replaced it) there were no add-ons for PDI; just taxes, license, state inspection fees, etc.

Yup.
Dealers can, and some will, charge you for anything they can get away with. Your dealer screwed you. I'm sitting here looking at a dealer invoice for an A4. On it, AoA credited the dealer $45 for the PDI. I have read this is the amount also credited for an A6. This is standard. In addition to the PDI, our dealer provided a meticulous and lustrous detailing as part of the negotiated price. ($1700 over dealer invoice.) That's the only way they deliver cars. Any quality Audi dealer will do the same.
Sorry you were treated badly.

Re: Don't feel so bad.
I bought my A6 in Sept. made a offer of $1600 over invoice. The dealer accepted it then tried to charge me $599 for P.D.I. in the contract.
That would deal make it about 2200 over invoice.
Still fair I guess.

Yes. Mine charged $0...
... and delivered a nearly perfectly detailed car. In fact, a separately owned detailer leases space at the dealership, and the dealer contracts with them to do all pre-delivery detailing.
Of course, you're always paying for it one way or the other. I made sure at the beginning of negotiations that all numbers discussed were 'drive away' prices with only tax and state fees added on.

I may have been fooled too :(
I think I may have gotten boned for $200 also. Sounds like bullsh**. How else are they going to give it to you, with the plastic on? and the shock spacers still in place???
I've gotta go check my receipt.

The dealer's cost of setting up the car ...
...should simply be taken into account when they decide how much over invoice they're willing to sell the car for. It's no different than any other dealer cost of doing business.
If they insist on itemizing it, fine. Then the true purchase price is invoice + margin + PDI. As long as it's plainly disclosed up front, the buyer can easily determine whether or not the total price is one that they're willing to pay.
The catch here is that so-called "PDI" is not added to "sticker price" (M.S.R.P.) and it should never show up as an item on the dealer invoice; there's plenty of dealer profit in any M.S.R.P. sale to cover whatever preparation they do to the car!

'fraid so...
neither of my Audis (98 A4 Avant; '01 A6 Avant) had an added PDI charge (and if they did I wouldn't pay it) and both were delivered well detailed, etc. Live & learn & use it in your next negotiation.
