Default Difference between A6 2.7t &A6 4.2 performance

I own a 2.7T. I'm thinking about selling the 2.7T and getting a 4.2. Opinions Please!

Steve Bollinger posted a comprehensive list of differences (see url).

In addition the 4.2 has:-
- no 6-speed option (bummer)
- no problem with torn TBBs
- no flying headlight washer caps

Several of us seem to be waiting to trade in our 4.2s on the S6 when it becomes available with a 6-speed.

https://www.audiworld.com/forum/m/a6/msgs/33922.phtml</a

Default If you prefer an automatic and don't modify....

...the 4.2 is the way to go. For the extra $8-10K you get some nice additional equipment, similar performance w/o lag, better durability, and a more aggressive look.

But if you want to achieve ultimate performance via mods and prefer a standard trans, the 2.7T is the better choice.

If you want it all, you can hope we'll get the S6, but it appears that we'll only get the Avant. No wagon for me.

Mike in Bend: why would even consider trading in your current A6 for another (unless you are leasing) one after your car has already depreciated. It may be better, but is it worth it? Why don't you either wait awhile until the next generation A6 or upgrade your current car?

Default Not Much

I have a loaded 2001T. No modifications made, now or ever. The performance difference between that and the 4.2 is neglible. The interiors are virtually identical in function and appearance. The seats look different, but it is only the stitching. Mechanically speaking all A6's get the same seats,(unless you opt for the sport package--which I did and in which case the 4.2 and 2.7 get the same sport seats--again with different stiching). As for features, you should go to your dealer and look at the A6 brochure, it compares side-by-side the features for all the A6's. You will find that the 4.2 and 2.7T have just about the same features, understanding of course that the 4.2 has some that are standard, which are optional on the 2.7T. I seem to recall that the only stuff you cannot get on the 2.7 is the heated and power-adjust steering wheel. However, by the time you load up the 2.7T to match the same features on the 4.2, the difference is only about $6,500---mainly because the leather and sunroof are standard on the 4.2, and about a 3K option on the 2.7T. The reason I ended up with the 2.7T is better gas mileage. The EPA is about the same, but in the real world quite different.(a little more weight, and two extra cylinders that always need feeding regardless of driving style) Also, this is not my first Audi with the V6 2.8 (which is what the 2.7 is based on.) Audi has been using this motor for years in many different models, and even supplies it to VW for some of its cars. While some people may be offended by sharing a motor with a VW, my view is a little more practical--the more a car manufacturer makes of a particular component the cheaper they can sell it, and the more refined the product--fit and finish is optimized. I just trust the V6 more. However, I would expect the 4.2 to be just fine also, since Audi has also been offering a version of that motor since the early 1990's. As for dependability, the only real difference in the cars is the motor--period. The rest of the stuff--brakes, electronics, driveline--all the same. Unless you cannot live without the sport suspension( which I assume your 2000 does not have), and/or just need to know that there is a V8 under the hood and/or just dig those larger fenders, no way would I take the $$$ hit.

Looks (more aggressive appearance, lower, wider fender flares, longer hood), few standard features, V8 grunt--only major differences between the two (enough to make me get 4.2(this week?)) but not enough to switch if I already had a 2.7T. Too big a financial blow--trade it in a year or two if S6 comes along.

One other difference - my 4.2 DRINKS gasoline!! While some of this is the driver and conditions, the thing REALLY has a thirst for high octane fossel fuel...

I actually think there is little performance difference between the two, in fact, you feel the torque with the 2.7TT much earlier than in the 4.2. The 4.2 needs a pair of "air accelerators" on it (um, think Audi calls that the R8...) similar to the 2.7 BiTurbo, to really give it a bit more low end kick. It does what a normally aspirated V8 is supposed to - screams a bit, and then kicks you in the pants around 3800 RPM.
