Discrepancy between gas gauge and actual tank volume...

as reported in an earlier post, my miles to empty display showed 0, my gas gauge showed empty, yet the car only took 18.5 gallons instead of 20+. Is this typical for Audis or is this unusual?

I understand that certain types of pumps can be damaged by running dry, either due to overheating or lack of lubrication, but I don't understand how running out of gas would hurt the computers.

...about 1.5 to 2 gallons in the tank. I have fairly routinely gone 15-20 miles past 0, and probably once went 30-35 miles past. But that's with my tank. Each person's gauge my vary a bit. I have put in 16.9 into my 16.4 tank but I bet that's the courtesy of an overoptimistic fuel pump (i.e., programmed to cheat you on gas). On an "honest" fuel pump, I think the most I have put in is 16.1, in my 16.4 tank.

Actually the problem arose rather quickly. When I turned the car off in the morning, the computer said 22 miles. I was only 1-2 miles from a gas station and wasn't worried about it. The gas tank gauge was just above empty. Later in the day when I started the ignition, the computer read "0" and I was, as an Audi neophyte, concerned about whether I'd run out of gas.

I shut the car off at night and it reads 20 or 25 miles to empty and the next morning it will read 5 miles to empty or 0. The guage will also not move from empty when it was slightly above the night before. I always just thought my dog was out cruising in the middle of the night!
