It's been a few years, but it was under pass side carpet and I'm pretty sure it was on angle in footwell, definitely not under seat. I have an 01 2.7 stick with esp. It's a metal box about 4x7 inches. On a 4.2 might be under rear seat. I tracked down location using info on Module Masters site. Maybe give them a call. If you can get by Miss Grumpy, someone might know.
success!!
2001 A6 Quattro 4.2 with ESP
its under the passenger side, under the carpet, on the incline.
I cleaned the connection and occasional cluster ABS and brake warning lights stopped. Still have black tape on cluster. Afraid that pulling tape off will jinx my fix.
I'm working to get the module out of my [new to me] '04 Allroad. It looks like someone took out the 12V connector and hardwired it. It doesn't seem to be a blade terminal/connector, as it will not budge. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Should I cut the wires and try to install a weatherpack connector?

Update: upon further research, it appears I have the Bosch 5.0 system. Groan. Wish I would've known that before taking the damn thing apart.
Sigh.
Just dropped a couple bills at Ross-Tech. Want to make sure it's the module and not just a switch or something.

ABS blinking 'red' on Lcd, 'yellow' icon on speedometer, handbrake Off but works well
@Audifirst:
ABS blinking 'red' on Lcd. And beeps trice.
ABS steady 'yellow' icon on speedometer.
Handbrake works well.
Even front brake pads indicator works perfectly.
Have you come across anything like this?
Pls I need help.
Thanks
NB: ABS unit part number is same as what you posted.
Get a scan with a VCDS capable scan tool. Generic OBD II will not adequately scan ABS if at all. Too many variables to look at without a proper scan. Could be the ABS module, wheel speed sensor(s), broken wire, etc. Scan will narrow things down. Try disconnecting the electrical plug on the ABS module for several minutes then reconnect. This may clear the fault indication at least temporarily but it may not and/ or it may return.
Like Harleyguy aays, VCDS will give pointers as to the problem. Warning, record your settings before swapping out, you will have to restore them later. Also, if you have ESP, you will have to recalibrate steering angle sensor.
