I need to replace my ignition switch. Is it as easy as just a plug and play thing or does it entail more detailed work? Will I need to get new keys or will my old keys work with the new ignition switch?

The ignition key cylinder is removeable.
Vehicle with automatic trans...needs to disengage interlock cable first.
After you've accessed the isteering lock housing, you need to lift an 'ignition interlock lever' slightly and pull the cable out of the steering lock housing.
Then, using the valet key, NOT the BF key with the keyless entry fob (because you can't get the paper clip in there) insert key into igniton lock and switch ignition on, disconnect immobilizer induction coil harness, insert steel wire (paper clip straightened) approx 1.5mm diameter as far as it will go in bore next to ignition key and depress lock at bottom of ignition cylinder....the ignition cylinder then pulls straight out. Reverse to install.
Of course before you get to this you have to remove the airbag and steering wheel and steering column upper and lowr trim and steering column stalk switches....

The ignition swtich is easy to replace- I did mine by popping out the IC and working through that hole. The lock cylinder is a separate piece. I found that the ignition switch, a common point of failure in Audi's isn't too bad. Sometimes, the end of the lock cylinder that turns the ignition switch will break off and round out the inside of the connection point, requiring a replacement of both. There are two set screws that hold the ignition switch in place. I can't remember exactly, but I think that it can be easier to unplug the harness to the back of the ignition switch AFTER removing those two screws, as it helps hold things in place. Good luck- it's not a bad job.

I'm just about to swap it on my C5 for the fourth time
Here's a link that should be helpful. It's for an A8, but very similar to A6. GL.<ul><li><a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/electrical_equipment/ignswitchreplace.html">A8 Ignition Switch DIY</a></li></ul>
