to see what he says. I have 18x8.5 (ET 35) on a lowered 2.7T and that's the widest I've gone in wheels. Also, the offset will make a difference, too. Keep in mind that a deep-dish style wheel may have a greater chance in NOT clearing the front calipers vs. a wheel w/ the spokes flush w/ the other lip (w/ the same offset).
Example: My old 19x8.5 was a deep-dish, Y-spoke wheel that needed spacers (5 mm) to clear front brake calipers. My current wheels are just fine because the spokes are flush w/ the outer lip (see sig).

AW Wheel/Tire Forum

Other than your ability to find a wheel that will fit over the calipers. The most common aftermarket wheel sizes for the A6 and S4 are 17x8" and 18x8.5". There are 17x7.5 (factory sport on 2.7t and stock S4) 17x8.5 (SSR comps, very nice light wheels) and 18x8". Any of these sizes can work but make sure they have been checked for caliper clearance. Anything listed on Tireracks site as fitting the A6 2.7t will work with no problems but there other wheels that will work as well.
